Family Medicine became recognized as a specialty in 1971 with the establishment of the AAFP (American Academy of Family Practice). The AAFP defines Family Practice as a medical specialty which provides continuing and comprehensive health care for the individual and the family. The scope of Family Practice encompasses all ages, both sexes, all organ systems, and every disease entity. A Family Physician who is residency-trained, although similar to the general practitioner of previous generations, has extensive training in all aspects of primary care medicine involving but not limited to the disciplines of pediatrics/adolescent medicine, obstetrics/gynecology, Internal Medicine, surgery, geriatrics, behavioral medicine, as well as additional areas of sub-specialists ranging from dermatology, orthopedics, sports medicine, etc. Thus the Family Physician serves as the patient's Family Advocate in all health related matters including integration of consultants and community resources, and represents the most convenient and effective way to meet the family's health care needs.
